Making Rocks

From: Barefoot Lucy (barefootlucy@yahoo.com) | Date: 2005-07-12 17:31:51 UTC-07:00
When I first joined this list a couple years ago,
there was a discussion about making rocks to hide
boxes in. I can't even pinpoint a rough idea of the
month that discussion happened in, so would someone
indulge me and tell me what the process was for making
rocks?

Thanks!
Lucy

Hey Lucy!

We created a "rock" for our original Shawnee Trail letterbox in a small park
in downtown Dallas - it gave many folks a chuckle when they finally spotted
it! It was our first try & not terribly authentic, but did the trick!
There are several possibilities to use: sculptamold, regular concrete and
flexall are three that are easy to find. You simply shape the stuff over a
saran-wrapped container.
We added pebbles & twigs to the surface before it hardened.
I'd suggest a visit to your local hardware store, because the look on the
helpful handymen is priceless when you explain what you want!
If you want specifics, I'll gladly tell you more off-list.

Ruby Tuesday

NOTE: Ours ended up weighing a lot, because we got carried away - think
SMALL!

Hypertufa is a common technique for making the faking rocks. Check
out gardenweb.com. They have a forum just for Hypertufa. You can
learn all need there. It's pretty amazing what some of these folks
can do.
